MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

Racism: the Marxist Weapon to Transform America

Friends,

Over the past several years and more recently in the MY CORNER columns, I have written about the double-headed Hydra, that weaponized cultural Marxist template on race and gender that seems to increasingly infect  and saturate this nation’s thinking and color just about everything we are supposed to think and do.

There is no escaping it.  If you watch television or a current movie for longer than a half-second, if your son or daughter is in grammar school or condemned to attend a state-supported college, if you participate gainfully in the workplace, if you attend a church of what passes for Christianity these days, if you have dealings with the legal system, if you interact with (some) friends or relatives—it jumps out and confronts you and demands your total subservience.

Its frequency is extrapolated, it seems, almost every day to include even the slightest and most insignificant occurrences and episodes in our lives. You can’t run, you can’t hide—it’s going to catch you and require that you tearfully confess that “racist” or “sexist” joke you told to fellow workers back in 1990. And if you are a public figure or a writer whose writing is aired publicly, well, be prepared for that new burning-at-the-stake that makes those Salem witch trials of the late 17th century look like tame Sunday school exercises.

Perhaps even more insidious than the ravages of feminism and gender ideology—but not by much—is the use of a cultural Marxist narrative on race, followed almost immediately by an explanation that includes deafening charges of the prevalence of “historic white supremacy” and “institutional or systemic racism” that can only be corrected by a total purging and transformation of American society: never-ending reparations and suffocating affirmative action, the eventual silencing of all dissent,  a total rewriting and reformulation of American history…and eventually by the “replacement” of the white population by immigrants and non-whites who will eventually out populate them.

Almost every day we hear—blared over the boob-tube, screamed by the Mainstream Media in various formats—of another instance of “police brutality” against black folks, another instance of racism, hurtful speech and actions which are now defined infallibly as “racist.” Blacks, in particular black males, commit a disproportionately higher percentage of violent crimes—it’s because of systemic racism and centuries of white oppression. Blacks aren’t allowed into “good neighborhoods”—it’s due to a subtle “real estate racism.” Blacks are prevented from voting—it’s because the white power structure demands they prove they are actually who they claim to be—obviously a racist ploy of “voter suppression” to keep them from exercising the franchise. Black students do far less well than white students in high school—it’s because of institutional racism and historic inequality in the educational system.

Professor Walter Williams points out [https://patriotpost.us/opinion/55531-educational-fraud-continues] that less than four out of ten graduating high school seniors can pass a simple English reading test, but only 17% of black students make the grade. The whites are dumb, you see; but for the black students it’s those centuries of domination and enslavement by whites that made them that way, despite more than a half century of intense remedial action and trillions of dollars spent since the 1960s.

The accepted vehicle that validates and propels this narrative and explains these disparities is the commonly accepted proposition by both the Left and by establishment conservatives, that we have failed miserably to fulfill the promise of the Founders of this nation that “all men are created equal, [and] that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights….,” while turning a blind eye to historic racism and white privilege.

Those words of the Declaration, say proponents, were a promise—a dream—unrealized by even those who authored it. Those men were submerged in and derailed by immediate compromises about slavery and states’ rights. The new American nation was, thus, blighted by the sin of racism, a racism that stained it from its very inception, and had to be vigorously and militantly opposed by steadfast action, including a “civil war” and massive and organized movements for “civil rights” and equality.

Both the Marxist “farther Left” and the dominant Neoconservatives of the Right posit this “equality” as the essential American principle, the fundamental underpinning and hope of the American republic.

For the Neocons, bound by their own acceptance of this template as the guiding light of “American exceptionalism” and “America-as-Idea,” that means advocating and pushing for the progressive (if gradual) expansion of “civil rights,” now broadened to include everything from the acceptance of affirmative action, to same sex marriage, to a defense of transgenderism. While claiming to be conservative and opposing the advances of the Left, the Neoconservatives are imprisoned by their own Marxistoid logic which they inherited from their Trotskyite forebears. Thus, Jonah Goldberg, Ben Shapiro, Guy Benson, Marc Thiessen, Max Boot, George Will, and countless others, in effect, can offer no legitimate opposition to the “farther Left.” Rather, they legitimize it and sanctify its gains, if at times begrudgingly.

For the cultural Marxists, its demands for equality are the Trojan Horse by which they are enabled to exact “justice” for centuries of white supremacy and oppression, as those inherent characteristics of white dominance violate egregiously that original (and obscured) promise. But, in fact, the totem of “equality” becomes for them only a wedge, a means to inject a revolutionary progressivism into the discourse which, fully realized, radically alters and transforms the very fabric, the history, and the nature of the American nation.

The problem for this egalitarian interpretation is that it reads the American Founding erroneously, that its proponents misunderstand and misconstrue the meaning of those words in the Declaration of Independence, that they attempt to fit American history into their own ideological Procrustean bed—and if it doesn’t fit, then to rewrite it or throw it out.

Abraham Lincoln—so deified by the Neoconservatives—is held up as the first American president who really understood the meaning of those words in the Declaration’s Preamble.  That is, it took eighty-seven years for a president to finally comprehend just what America was all about. Not Washington, not Madison, not Adams, not Jackson, not even Jefferson, but a president elected by a sharply regional minority to lead a rump portion of the fractured country in the middle of a war between the states, and who stated more than once that his motives were strictly war  related and propagandistic—it was he who finally understood that “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

I have written previously at some length on this process [cf. https://www.unz.com/article/american-exceptionalism-the-south-and-the-brain-robbery-of-conservatism/  and also,   http://www.unz.com/article/black-white-in-culturally-marxist-america/ and, http://www.unz.com/article/the-conservative-rout-and-donald-trump/], which I have termed a kind of intellectual and historical “brain robbery of American history,” and I have cited a number of historians on the topic who have written in detail to disentangle the misreading of the thinking of the Founders and Framers and their intentions: in particular the late Dr. Mel Bradford (Original Intentions, 1993) and Professor Barry Alan Shain (The Declaration of Independence in Historical Context, 2014), and before them, Professors George Carey and Wilmoore Kendall (The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition, 1970).

In sum, the American nation was not founded on the promise of “equality” of all men. Those justifying words of the Declaration were largely directed at the British Parliament which the Second Continental Congress believed was treating the American colonies unfairly. On the contrary, the Founders and Framers understood fully that the very concept of egalitarianism was not only unnatural and unrealizable, but potentially destructive of the very fragile republic they were attempting to create.
Thus, in a real sense, the key to combating the race hustlers and Marxist ideologues on the far Left as well as the egalitarian Neocons on the supposed Right is a clearer and far better understanding of our Founding, our basic documents, and our history.

Unfortunately, you will not get that in most high school textbooks or in most college history classrooms. You won’t get it from Hollywood. You won’t hear it from most politicians. You won’t hear it on “conservative” Fox News, bound up as it is in presenting the Neocon vision of America-as-Idea which is fulfilled in the imposition of universal equality (and democracy and all that flows from that).

Yet a fundamental counter-revolution must occur if there be any hope for recovery, restoration, and throwing back the seemingly irresistible assault by those who would pervert, destroy, and transform our Western Christian culture and history. The only other alternative is our ignominious disappearance from history, itself, to quote T. S. Eliot, "not with a bang, but a whimper."

Three short items I remit today which, in diverse ways, offer some perspective on this situation.

First, Pat Buchanan asks the question whether America’s racial divide is permanent, will it get worse, and just what may happen?  Second, I pass on a portion of a recent CNN interview with “social justice warrior” and activist, Michaela Angela Davis (not the notorious Communist Angela Davis, this one is worse) on the inescapability of “white racism”—if you are white, you are, by definition, a racist.

Lastly, there is Fred Reed’s caustic and humorous view of affirmative reaction: behind his delicious irony there is a whole lot of truth to be had.

Is America's Racial Divide Permanent?

By Patrick J. Buchanan   Friday - June 1, 2018

For Roseanne Barr, star of ABC's hit show "Roseanne," there would be no appeal. When her tweet hit, she was gone.  "Roseanne's Twitter statement, is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," declaimed Channing Dungey, the black president of ABC Entertainment.

Targeting Valerie Jarrett, a confidante and aide of President Barack Obama, Roseanne had tweeted: If the "muslim brotherhood & the planet of the apes had a baby=vj."   Offensive, juvenile, crude, but was that not pretty much the job description ABC had in mind for the role of Roseanne in the show?

Roseanne also tweeted that George Soros, 87-year-old radical-liberal billionaire, had been a Nazi "who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps and stole their wealth."   The Soros slur seems far more savage than the dumb racial joke about Jarrett, but it was the latter that got Roseanne canned.

Her firing came the same day that 175,000 employees of 8,000 Starbucks's stores were undergoing four hours of instruction to heighten their racial sensitivities.  These training sessions, said The Washington Post, "marked the start of Starbucks' years-long commitment to new diversity and sensitivity programs after two African-Americans were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks on April 12."

The Philly Starbucks manager, a woman, had called the cops when the two black men she took to be loiterers refused to leave.  Rachel Siegel of the Post describes the four-hour session:

"At first the employees are prompted to find differences. They watched a video in which (Starbucks head) Howard Schultz talks about his vision for a more inclusive company and country. They reflected what a place of belonging means to them. And they examine their own biases.

"Each group viewed a documentary underwritten by Starbucks and directed by Stanley Nelson. In the film people of color talk about experiences of being followed in stores. Footage from the civil rights movement quickly progresses to 21st-century cellphone videos capturing people being dragged off a plane, threatened in a New York deli and choked at a North Carolina Waffle House."

On reading this, the terms "Orwellian" and "re-education camp" come to mind.

Earlier in May, the NFL issued a rule saying players who refuse to stand for the national anthem must remain in the locker room. If they take a knee on the field this coming season, they can be punished and the team fined.

Great was the outrage when this ruling came. The First Amendment rights of black players were being brutally trampled upon.  Yet the NFL has always had restrictions on behavior, from evicting players from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct to curtailing end-zone dances.

What is the common thread that runs through these social clashes from just this last month?

It is race. Each episode fits neatly into the great media narrative of an irredeemably racist America of white oppressors and black victims.

Had it been two white guys hanging out in that Philly Starbucks, who were told by the manager to buy a cup of coffee or get out, the spat would never have become a national story.

These incidents, coming as they do 50 years after the historic advances in civil rights, induce a deep pessimism that this country will ever escape from the endlessly boiling cauldron of racial conflict.

Today, because of cellphone videos, social media, 24-hour cable and the subsequent nationalization of even the most trivial incidents, our national conversation is more suffused than ever with matters of race.

For many, race has become a constant preoccupation.  And in each of these incidents and disputes, the country divides along the familiar fault lines, and the accusations and arguments go on and on until a new incident engenders a new argument.

The America of the 1960s, with its civil rights clashes and "long hot summers," was a far more segregated society than today. Yet the toxic charge of "racist" is far more common now.

And how much do these conversations correspond to the real crisis of black America? Here is a sentence culled from another Post story this week: "Three fatal shootings ...over the Memorial Day weekend brought the (Ward 8 total) to 30 homicides so far this year."

Are white cops really the problem in Ward 8, Anacostia, when 30 people in that black community have been shot or stabbed to death in the first five months of 2018?  Washington, D.C., spends more per student than almost any other school district. Yet the test scores of vast numbers of black kids have already fallen below "proficiency" levels by the time they reach fourth and eighth grade, and the high school truancies have reached scandalous levels.

How does ABC's cashiering of "Roseanne," or apologies to the two guys at Starbucks, or restrictions on the rights of millionaire NFL players to kneel during our national anthem address the real crisis?

Is white America really black America's biggest problem?

Michaela Angela Davis: All Trump Voters Are Racist

30 May 2018

Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day,” culture critic Michaela Angela Davis said “yes” all the people who voted for Donald Trump are racist.

Partial transcript as follows:

DAVIS: They made a connection together right when Trump touted her ratings, almost took credit for them, said it was about us. They made their relationship clear. And he’s made it more popular, I think, to be openly racist. And I think it’s important we don’t make Trump seem this untouchable thing that no one gets to be Trump but Trump. Tens of millions of people voted for him after he showed his cards for years.

BERMAN: Are you suggesting that they’re racist

DAVIS: Absolutely yes. Yes.

BERMAN: All the people that voted for Donald Trump are racist?

DAVIS:  Yes. They may not be violently racist, they may not be — he’s targeted. He’s very clear and strategic. Look anti-blackness is a strategy that has been the foundation of part of the American project. So if you — we have to grapple with the idea if that if you heard someone at their rally say ‘build a wall, kill them all.’ If you heard someone say—

CAMEROTA: You know that people interpret this differently and to paint as broad a brush saying you are that saying everybody who voted for him is racist. They’ll say that people compartmentalize during Bill Clinton and you overlook the things that you’re uncomfortable with because you like the policy. You can’t paint that broad of a brush stroke.

DAVIS: Racism isn’t broad. What you are not hearing is there’s so many different levels of racism and how it works itself out.

CAMEROTA: I hear you.

DAVIS: There’s levels to how it is interpreted and there’s levels to how it is acted out and most of the time we are operating in racist structures, so you as an individual may not —may not understand that you are racist but you are working in a racist structure. So that’s how policemen of color can be participatory. So it’s not — it is so complicated and that’s why we have to have sustained complicated, nuanced conversations that ground themselves in history.

THE UNZ REVIEW

Affirmative Action and the American Mind: If Any

FRED REED • MAY 29, 2018

“Affirmative action” means hiring people because they can’t do the job well. Near-synonyms are “diversity,” meaning groups that cannot do the job well, and “inclusiveness,” which means seeking people who you know cannot do the job well. These underpin American society, and have ruined education. For some time the sciences seemed less susceptible to the prevailing enstupidation because mathematics would present an impenetrable barrier to the the insufficiently bright. This, astonishingly, is changing. The sciences are being dumbed down to–are you surprised?–spare the feelings of included affirmative diversity.

Which somewhat curiously brings us to international politics and an aspect of scientific schooling that does not appear in the mainstream press: Psychometrists, people who endeavor to measure intelligence, universally agree that the Chinese are more intelligent than Eurowhites. So are the Koreans and Japanese. Since for the most part psychometrists are themselves white, their conclusions presumably do not spring from racial chauvinism. The Chinese advantage is measured at around five IQ points. This is not great but makes a considerable difference at the high end of the distribution.

As a matter of observable–if, to many, unwelcome–fact, virtually all of the work in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in America is done by whites. Blacks contribute nothing and Hispanics, to date anyway, very little. For reasons of politics we must pretend not to notice. When a piano is falling toward one’s head, one may pretend that it is not, but not for long. The arrival of the piano will ensure this.

America’s prosperity and place in the world very much depend on invention and excellence in the STEM fields. Boeing sells airliners, and provides jobs to Americans, only because its airliners are technically equal to those of AirBus. A lowering of technical capacity will have unfortunate consequences for the country.

America’s whites number at about 200 million, the Han Chinese of China about a billion–five times as many.

Beijing understands perfectly that technological virtuosity is crucial to the country’s well-being. It spends heavily, and successfully, on increasing China’s performance. Those who follow such things note the speed of the the advance. A fully developed China will be able to deploy several times as many researchers and engineers, these being at least as intelligent as America’s, on problems of its choosing. Numbers count. They will count more as time goes by.

This strongly suggests that, unless Washington starts a major war to prevent it, or China collapses from within, the future is in the East. It also suggests that the United States would be well advised to do all it can to maintain its competitiveness for as long as it can. Instead it seems to be committing imperial harakiri, deliberately lowering the quality of education in all fields at all levels.

America’s suicide note: How Identity Politics is Harming the Sciences, by Heather Mac Donald. It is long but well worth reading. It documents the systematic lowering of intellectual standards in the sciences to increase the numbers of women and underperforming minorities. This, as she makes clear at length, is strongly supported by the federal government. A few examples:

“Entry requirements for graduate education are being revised. The American Astronomical Society has recommended that Ph.D. programs in astronomy eliminate the requirement that applicants take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in physics, since it has a disparate impact on females and URMs….” (These are “Underrepresented Minorities.”)

“Mathematical problem-solving is being deemphasized in favor of more qualitative group projects; the pace of undergraduate physics education is being slowed down so that no one gets left behind.”

“A typical INCLUDES grant from October 2017 directs $300,000 toward increasing Native American math involvement by incorporating “indigenous knowledge systems” into Navajo Nation Math Circles.”

“The National Institutes of Health are another diversity-obsessed federal science funder. Medical schools receive NIH training grants to support postdoctoral education for physicians pursuing a research career in such fields as oncology and cardiology. The NIH threatens to yank any training grant when it comes up for renewal if it has not supported a sufficient number of “underrepresented minorities” (URMs).”

“Medical school administrators urge admissions committees to overlook the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores of black and Hispanic student applicants and employ “holistic review” in order to engineer a diverse class. The result is a vast gap in entering qualifications.”

Mac Donald goes on to tell of school after school accepting diversity with credentials well below those of real students, of schools dropping the GRE requirement because it makes obvious that in STEM fields women and minorities are not performing as desired. (“Minorities” always means “poorly performing minorities.” Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and so on don’t count.)

The comparatively young may be so steeped in such corrupted pedagogy that they do not know how the sciences were formerly taught. A description:

I went to a small Southern school, Hampden-Sydney College, of respectable but not astonishing credentials. I believe the pre-dumbing-down SATs were a bit over 1100. This was before social justice had replaced competence as a reason for study. Freshmen were expected to be fully literate and know algebra cold. Remedial courses would have been thought crazy. If you needed them, you needed to be somewhere else. In any event, if you had graduated from high school without being able to read, you were unlikely to learn.

Freshman chemistry at H-S–much like freshman chemistry in other schools I suppose–was not a cooperative shared learning experience that avoided unnecessary facts. It did not exist to avoid disturbing heartwarming but dim-witted minorities. It was–boom!–s-p hybrid bonding orbitals, resonance in benzene rings, the wave equation del-squared psi and a bunch of constants, probability densities, quantum degeneracy, equilibrium constants, Pivnert the ideal gas equation, the mathematics of a mass spec, the Krebs cycle, and endless problems: 2.4 grams of phlogiston anhydride are dissolved in 2 liters of 2,4-diethyl-polywannacrackerine. What are the products and the weights and molarities of each at equilibrium?

It was real chemistry, sink or swim, and most of us swam because we were looking at med school or graduate work. If there had been affirmative-action students–”students”–most of the material would have had to be eliminated. Mathematical illiterates do not balance redox equations or interpolate four-place log tables which, in those slide-rule days, we did.

Pop quiz. Take out a sheet of paper. Question: Are Chinese students, there or here, studying de-mathematized semi-chemistry for reasons of identity proportionality? Or are they, at every high-end university or elite high school in America, eating the white kids alive?

The same madness appears below the level of college. Walter Williams writing of the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress in America: “Only 37 percent of 12th-graders tested proficient or better in reading, and only 25 percent did so in math. Among black students, only 17 percent tested proficient or better in reading, and just 7 percent reached at least a proficient level in math.”

What?

Affirmative action in the sciences needs to be scrapped. For everybody. The purpose of studying astrophysics should not be to make social-justice warriors feel good about themselves. If women do not do well at engineering mathematics, let them become neurosurgeons.

MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

Six MY CORNERs Now Online for the First Time

Friends,

Slowly but surely I am going back to earlier last year to edit (and sometimes to correct or update) MY CORNER columns that I wrote then and make them available online via this blog. Most of them have never been published in any format, so to preserve them and make them more widely available, I offer now six from last August (which I’ve massaged a bit to ferret out—I hope—typos and correct any lapses in my written expression).

Proceeding from the latest (August 27) to earlier (August 20), these essays address: how and why the attack on Confederate monuments is just the first step in a broad and multifaceted assault on the entirety of our Western and Christian culture and civilization; why given the present condition of the American nation we may be headed for a real, violent “civil war”; whether Robert E. Lee and the other Confederates were really “traitors” and what this means for the very foundations of our constitutional system and the understanding of our history; what are America’s vital interests—if any—in Afghanistan; the origins of what I call “world revolution” and the critical role and operations of globalist George Soros; and lastly, an examination of what is meant by the current calls for “unity” and the refrain, “can’t we just all get along.”

Although the titles of these items generally indicate what is covered, in several I go into broader detail. In fact, I think there is a certain unifying element—a certain nexus--that links these columns. And behind that, a vision of Western Christian civilization, of our culture, which is under extreme attack and which is in danger of disappearing altogether.

If anything, then, I hope these serve as a kind of “clamor ad caelum”—a cry to Heaven and an alarm from the rooftops—to inform and arouse, a call to action, whether that be domestically to simply insure the continuance of the Christian and traditional family which receives and passes on that inestimable inheritance deeded to us by our fathers and our ancestors, or whether that may mean a position of great authority in society or in our culture or politics for someone dedicated to those traditions—in whatever role, in whatever function, we find ourselves in.

Please take a look and, if you will, pass them on. More will follow as time permits.

MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

Roseanne Barr, White Supremacy, and the Ineradicable Sin of Racism

Friends,

Today I pass on to you the last of three pieces that I’ve recently written and subsequently were published by national web and print magazines. This one, a version of it, originally appeared on the MY CORNER blog site on May 30 [http://boydcatheyreviewofbooks.blogspot.com/2018/05/may-30-2018-my-corner-by-boyd-cathey.html]. The Unz Review picked it up as it addressed the current flap and very heated discussion over Roseanne Barr and her “racist” comments about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, and it was the featured item on their web site that very day.

As usual, I have far too many items in too many folders to discuss topics like I would wish. I do want to return soon to the cultural Marxist template on race and gender, as they form the narrative that increasingly determines and defines—and regulates and disciplines—everything we say, everything we attempt to do, and everything we are impelled and told to think. With the establishment of this template as undebatable, the sharply dogmatic truth in every aspect of our lives, all other views, all other perspectives not only are dis-authorized but, eventually, will be criminalized.

Already too many Americans are paralyzed by fear—must look over their shoulders nervously with trepidation—when these topics come up in any discussion, especially at the job site, or in entertainment, or in public schools and universities, or in politics. They know what will happen if they should cross that steadily advancing  progressivist fault line, past which they may be fired, their careers ended and their reputations besmirched and ruined by those merciless bugaboo condemnations—“you’re a racist”—a “sexist”—“guilty of hate speech”—a “homophobe.” And from these accusations, even with the demanded sensitivity training, the requisite and tearful apologies, and all the reparations in the world, you are still intrinsically guiltyif  you are white, a member of the historically defined (by the cultural Marxists) oppressive race. That stain can, in reality, never be erased (despite such ludicrous examples as Leftist Senator Elizabeth Warren--who is white--claiming, spuriously, that she is descended from a Native American!).

Secondarily, as I have done repeatedly, I will continue to attempt to demonstrate the corruption of the Establishment “conservative movement, inc.” and the Establishment Republican Party, which, although they protest their opposition to this advancing progressivism, by their deep-seated principles actually share essential fundamentals with the farther Left on equality (race, gender, civil rights) and globalism and the New World Order. Neoconservatism, which dominates what passes for the “Right” in the United States, actually enables and sanctifies—makes palatable and acceptable to conservatives—the  conquests of the farther Left and, as such, in ironic ways is far more dangerous to the future of what remains of this republic than the openly and clearly defined Left.

The following essay published by The Unz Review examines this, using the Roseanne Barr episode as the latest example of how this process works:

THE UNZ REVIEW

Roseanne Barr, Uncle Remus and the Multicultural Politically Correct Briar Patch

I’ve never been much of a fan of Roseanne Barr. I never watched her earlier sitcom, Roseanne (1988-1997), but, then, I normally don’t watch much network television either. Unlike some conservatives I wasn’t that excited by the renewal of the show by ABC in mid-season in 2017, and I am not that surprised that the program would be cancelled, given Barr’s past “shock jock” role among entertainers.

Yet there is something woefully amiss here, and it is not just the piously hypocritical piled-on condemnations coming from the Mainstream Media left, or the long-faced jeremiads and nervous attempts at dissociation from Roseanne (after praising her recent on-screen jabs at the far left) coming from the Neocon media. The tweet Barr made about former Obama adviser, Valerie Jarrett, that Jarrett was the “baby” of “the Muslim Brotherhood & the Planet of the Apes” (Jarrett is black and was born in Iran), was stupid, not funny, and, of course, “insensitive” by today’s p-c standards. But was it any more insensitive than previous over-the-top comments she has made? Was it really “racist,” or is it just one more indication of the rapidly advancing politically-correct goal posts about race (and gender) that our contemporary culture posits as dogmatic, especially if the comment comes from someone not part of the “authorized Left”?

Consider:

·         In 1990 Roseanne sang the National Anthem at a San Diego Padres versus Cincinnati Reds baseball game, purposefully out of tune and “screechy,” then spitting and grabbing her crotch, for which she was roundly condemned (including by President George H. W. Bush;

·         In 2009 she posed as Adolf Hitler for the Jewish satirical magazine, Heeb, in a feature titled, “That Oven Feeling,” holding a tray of burnt gingerbread cookies she called “burnt Jew cookies” (Barr is Jewish herself). Again, she was slammed for what many considered “anti-semitism”;

·         In 2014 she tweeted the home address and phone number of George Zimmerman, who was found innocent in the killing of Trayvon Martin, stating that “no one can hide anymore…If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll r[oute] his address again – maybe go 2 his house myself.”

·

And these are just a few of her more controversial escapades. She has a long history of pronouncing and propagating off-the-wall conspiracy theories, and what some critics have called “extreme satire” with “shock value.”

Yet none of those instances, none of that history, produced the kind of swift and definitive action like what the ABC Network took in less than three hours after Barr’s offending tweet.

Conservative pundits on Fox were quick to condemn her but raise the specter of a double standard: if Roseanne was being axed why had not such severe action been taken against any number of other comedians, in particular those who had at times viciously attacked President Trump or his supporters?

Leftist “Comedian” Kathy Griffin had held up, notoriously, a facsimile of the bloody, severed head of Trump back in 2017, and although she apologized at the time, by April of 2018 she had withdrawn her apology defiantly:

“I take the apology back,” she said during an appearance Monday on “The View.” She then punctuated her statement with an expletive directed at Trump. She also said she was…not sorry for her attacks on Trump’s oldest sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, whom she referred to as “Eddie Munster and date rape.” “Look, I’m not holding back on this family,” said the 57-year-old comic. “This president is different and I have been through the mill and so now I’m back on the road.” [https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/30/kathy-griffin-sorry-not-sorry-over-trump-severed-head-photo/]

Despite an initial worry that her antics might endanger her career, apparently that was not the case…after all the target was Trump and the mostly-white “deplorables.” And in such instances, you can get away, almost literally, with murder.

The reasons for this, I would suggest, are wrapped up in America’s current and increasingly mad descent into and embrace of the culturally dominant Marxist template on race (as well as on gender). One can get away with holding a model of Donald Trump’s severed head or intimating how satisfying it would be if the president were to get killed: there are few limits indeed to such satire and “humor.” But venture into anything remotely related to race, even humorously or inadvertently, especially if the offender is not part of the “authorized Leftist establishment,” and the results are a veritable death sentence, followed by exile to the remotest gulag in Siberia.

This latest incident comes as the media establishment is consciously attempting to throttle free speech—most recently actions taken by PayPal, by Google, by Facebook, by Amazon and by other major Internet sites to both block access to sites that these lords of the Net consider to be “racist, sexist, extremist, and Neo-Confederate,” and to prevent Internet financial transactions for them.

Starbucks, that gathering site for leftist latte’ sippers and hip Millenials, just closed for a day to require its employees to undergo “race sensitivity training.” What had happened to occasion this was that two black men had entered a Starbucks to use the rest room facilities. They were informed that facilities were only for customers. Quickly the incident mushroomed into an example of “racial prejudice,” despite the fact that there are many restaurants that have a similar policy. Can you imagine the same thing occurring if the men had been white?

Just in recent weeks we have heard (Fox News) that at the University of Michigan (and on perhaps another 200 campuses), zealous “social justice warrior” students have been instructed by the university administration to report (anonymously of course) if they overhear another student making “racist,” “sexist,” or “homophobic” remarks, even if those conversations are private.

And increasingly a worker in a business who happens to let slip a word or comment vaguely considered “racist” by someone standing near, can be terminated, or, perhaps even worse, made to sit through interminable “sensitivity” sessions organized by that company’s EEOC bureaucrats.

Back when I was gainfully employed by the North Carolina State Archives, I recall an incident that illustrates this so very well, and with accompanying irony. It began with a committee of senior archivists meeting to discuss the accession of a major haul of government records. Those records were a jumble, that is, totally unorganized and which would require major arrangement and description, and quite a bit of time dedicated to them to make them usable. One member of the committee—by no means at all a right wing type—casually mentioned that he hoped we would “not get thrown into that briar patch,” approximating and paraphrasing language and imagery that shows up in the famous Joel Chandler Harris literary folktale collection, Uncle Remus.

Well, you would have thought that Sheriff “Bull” Connor himself had risen up from his grave, from Selma, Alabama, with Billy clubs, water hoses, and angry German shepherd dogs! One woman on the committee, a black lady, immediately accused the offending fellow archivist of “racism” and “employing racist stereotypes” and showing “hatred.” Instead of attempting to calm matters and assure the offended archivist that certainly no insult was intended, the head of the committee panicked. And no manner of explanations from the archivist who made the comment would suffice to assuage the lady’s perceived “racist” insult.

As a result, the entire staff was compelled—forced—to sit through a long “racial sensitivity” session, counseling was offered, staged “role play” during the indoctrination was performed, and we were all requested to fill out an “evaluation form” about how we planned to combat on-the-job racism and racist-tinged commentary, humor, etc., etc.

But that was not the end of it. The “incident” went up the chain of command. Later we were once again compelled to attend, but this time in smaller, more intimate sessions in which “interaction” with paid “counselors” took place. My attendance, however, was short lived: during my first encounter I demanded to know how they defined terms. How did they define “racism,” what was “bigotry,” how did we determine what was an innocent comment made off hand, and how did we distinguish that from “racist” behavior? How could we know if a comment we made referring to our state’s Confederate history, for instance, might be considered “racist” by someone overhearing us?

Those counselors looked at me with mounting disgust and frustration—obviously, I should have known that those “devil” terms were whatever the current enforcers of political correctness intended for them to mean. The whole process was, essentially, intended to turn the white staffers, especially white males on staff, into obliging, weak-brained wimps—the latest step in an ongoing process of confirming the template of the culturally Marxist Left on race.

At the end of the first session, I was politely told that I did not have to return for any additional sessions, that I had finished my training…but I can’t help thinking that from then on some higher ups kept a wary eye on me.

Ironic it seems: on one hand we are rigorously told that race is just skin deep, that we aren’t supposed to notice the color of a person’s skin or sex, but rather only his or her character. But at the very same time we are firmly importuned to understand that because of past white oppression and white supremacy, we must compensate for past injustices, engage in reparations of some sort, bend to affirmative action—all based singularly on race!

You may remember that classic comedy, “No Time for Sergeants,” starring Andy Griffith, and you may also recall the scene where Andy’s sergeant informs him that when he sees a female officer that he is looking not at a lady, but only an officer—and then the subsequent hilarity occasioned by Andy’s refusal to acknowledge the femininity of an officer he encounters.

Just like in Andy’s case, this sort of indoctrination was—and is—enough to make any sensible person go totally mad, to engender fear of offending, and to provoke in many recipients a certain kind of paralysis when it comes to social interaction. But, and I witnessed this in my own environment, I think it was intended that way: if not completely to pervert and transform a person’s normal and natural thinking processes, to at the very least render him docile and mentally castrated, unwilling—or more so, unable—to challenge the multiculturalist political correctness that infects our society and our culture, and incapable of resisting the seemingly inevitable latest advance of Big Brother and cultural Marxism.

There are intrepid souls out there who increasingly risk not only this kind of censorship, but even worse penalties. Is not jail time a real possibility in the future for those—for us—who do not conform to the increasingly severe and ideologically weaponized rules and laws that emit from our managerial elites, both seen and unseen?

My parents never realized how utterly racist they were when they read those fanciful Joel Chandler Harris stories to my sister and me when we were children…or took us to see Walt Disney’s now apparently embargoed The Song of the South. But, then, we did not live in an “enlightened” society back then….

MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

Newest Essay Published in Chronicles Magazine, June 2018: “Cultural Marxists and the Stranglehold of ‘Race’

Friends,

As promised, I pass on my latest essay published in Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture (June 2018 issue), “Cultural Marxists and the Stranglehold of ‘Race’.” Included in the same issue are major essays by Professor Claude Polin (Professor Emeritus of Philosophy-University of Paris-Sorbonne), titled: “Impossible Dreams: The West’s Undying Love Affair with Marx,” by editor Chilton Williamson on “One Nation Divided” (about the increasingly unbridgeable ideological divide in this country), several well-written critical essays about American misadventures in Syria, excellent pieces by Justin Raimondo, Roger McGrath, Srdja Trifkovic, Taki Theodoracopulos, Jack Trotter, and others, numerous reviews, and fascinating cultural perspectives on film and music by James O. Tate and George McCartney. As usual, Chronicles sets the standard in the very best of traditional, well-written and well-argued reading; it is very simply required reading for defenders of our Western Christian culture.

The June issue is now available on the shelves of major bookstores, and available via the Chronicles web site [https://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/], and you may subscribe to it at: https://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/my-account/subscribe/  and also via Amazon.com. Published monthly since 1976, with support from the Rockford Institute, Chronicles intelligently examines the major issues and challenges confronting not just the United States but our civilization. And it is almost alone among major print journals standing foursquare for the beliefs and values that have undergirded Western society for two-thousand years…beliefs that you and I share.

I have been a subscriber for around twenty-five years, and I have found every issue to be of value. I think you would too.

Here, then, is the essay:

Cultural Marxists and the Stranglehold of “Race”

By Boyd D. Cathey   June 2018

[This article also appears online at the Chronicles Magazine website, accessible to subscribers: https://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/2018/June/43/6/magazine/article/10844583/]

One of the major subjects that most self-styled “conservatives” seem to find uncomfortable discussing in any depth, indeed, often flee from like mice before the hungry house cat, is race.  The general feeling always seems to be that anything a prominent “conservative” might say on the topic, unless it be to offer some sort of fearful confirmation or slightly nuanced affirmation of standard Leftist/cultural Marxist arguments, will be construed and interpreted by the near entirety of the media and our political and academic culture to be “racially insensitive,” or implicitly (or even explicitly) countenancing “racism.”

Many of these accusations are, as we know, blatantly political in their usage.  We are now accustomed to hearing such charges, such intimations and suggestions, trotted out at election time to characterize and disauthorize a Republican or “conservative” candidate for public office, even if that candidate has more than paid his due to the dominant and standard politically-correct views on the subject.  Even such Republican establishmentarians as Mitt Romney and George W. Bush could not avoid the accusation from the Leftist media and from the professional race inquisitors: for the new inquisitors, it is not just a question of avoiding embarrassing or difficult questions, one must actively engage in “combatting racism” to the point of groveling publicly and expressing regret for centuries of “white oppression,” slavery, colonialism, and racial inequality.  Only then may the penitent meekly seek admission into the fellowship of the “new elect” of racial Progressivism, and even then, for whites it always remains an extremely difficult task.  “Whiteness” is always a powerful impediment that must be overcome, if at all.

There is always someone like the Reverend William Barber (former head of the North Carolina NAACP who now leads the national “Poor Peoples’ Campaign”) to denounce the miscreant who is perceived as less than pure, who certainly must harbor indelible “racist sentiments” down deep in his heart.  After all, the cultural Marxist template that increasingly dominates not just academia but in the public square makes the assumption before all and any discussion may be had or entered into that America was, from its inception and founding, a “racist” nation, a country essentially based in racialist precepts and with a foundation incorporating racial inequality into the basic law of the land.

With such a template, such a measuring stick now regulating thought and discourse, is it any wonder that even such prominent “mainstream” Republicans as Bush, John McCain, and most of the Neoconservatives, despite their best efforts to demonstrate their craven fidelity to the essentially Leftist narrative on race, equality and civil rights, still find it hard to “make the grade” in the eyes of a Barber, a Maxine Waters, an Al Sharpton, or any of the other racial gate keepers out there, especially now that their friends are in near total control of our university campuses and at networks like CNN or MSNBC.

The goal posts of Marxist Progressivism are always moving forward, the standard and narrative always advancing further Left.  Even “conservatives” who once believed that all they had to do was endorse the “civil rights” bills of the 1960s and advocate “equal opportunity” for all, and, to quote that newly-minted image of Martin Luther King as a conservative icon - - that people should be “judged on the quality of their character, not on the color of their skin” - - are now looked at with suspicion. It should be apparent - - but apparently is not - - to Republicans and conservatives that you can never really get to the left of a Democrat on race in an election, especially if he or she is black.

The fundamental problem is, ironically, that in a certain sense the cultural Marxist critique of America’s founding and its founding documents has some validity, but only up to point.  The United States was not founded on some egalitarian idea about the equal rights of all men to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  Those words in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence were directed specifically at the British parliament from which the colonists had not received the rights due as Englishmen, and not at the colonies and the colonists who were attempting to break from the Mother Country and justify and offer reasons for that break.

As the late Dr. Mel Bradford expertly detailed in his volume Original Intentions: On the Making and Ratification of the Constitution (1993) and Colgate University Professor Barry Alan Shain has convincingly documented in his massive and annotated study, The Declaration of Independence in Historical Context: American State Papers, Petitions, Proclamations, and Letters of the Delegates to the First National Congress (2014), the Founders recoiled and shrank back in horror that such words might be applied domestically to the several colonies and those institutions, laws and usages then in place.  It was left to each new state to decide for itself about its domestic institutions, including the continuation (or not) of slavery, the establishment (or not) of a state religion and religious tests, the imposition (or not) of property qualifications on the “right” to vote, and whether to encourage (or not) “public education.”  Indeed, this was the very reason for the adoption of both the 9th and 10th amendments to the Constitution, to ensure the protection of those inherent rights of the states and the citizenry.  The historical fact is that inequality was enshrined in our constitutional system, and it was left up to the various states to decide what internal institutions and practices they would maintain.  And this solution, which was agreed upon by all the representatives of the states who met in Philadelphia, served the country well until 1861.

The ideological assumption posited by the cultural Marxists and the implication parroted by far too many Republicans and so-called “conservatives,” is that the original American foundation was therefore, by definition, colored by varying degrees of racism.  And once that ideological template is accepted, future argument - - its limits and terms  - - are set, and it becomes only a matter of degree and whether the nation must be completely re-made (per the cultural Marxists), or, in the case of the Neocons, “reformed” in line with their (faulty) interpretation - - and promise - - of the Declaration.

This position makes the widely-accepted assumption that the enshrined “inequality” in our founding documents is equivalent to and a specific endorsement of “racism,” and that it is “race” that is the central, if not unique, key to all of subsequent American history.

I would submit that our ancestors viewed the term and the existence of “inequality” in a much broader and normative sense, reflecting their understanding of human nature, the laws of nature, and, indeed, of both Biblical teaching and their inheritance of English law.  Of course, race can be placed into that context; but it should also be noted that, historically, bondage of one person to another, or of a society composed of classes, did not necessarily imply universal white domination over or exploitation of blacks because they were blacks.   Nearly all societies in Africa practiced and sanctified slavery from time immemorial, but black-on-black slavery, of one tribe of Africans over another.  Who, then, is the “racist”?

Indeed, it can be argued that economic issues have been just as important, if not more so, in our history.  And race has usually receded as a major concern when measured against nationally pressing or disastrous economic issues (e.g., the Great Depression), or the appeal to national solidarity and the defense of the homeland or family in times of war and conflict or national emergency.  It was not just historians such as Charles Beard (in his influential An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States, 1913) who forcefully expressed this view a century ago. More recent writers have taken issue, if implicitly, with the dominant Marxist historical school (e.g., Eric Foner) which insists that race and racism are in essence the only considerations by which to evaluate our history.

Eric Foner casts the War Between the States and Reconstruction in this context:  the War was, simply stated, to free the slaves and “overturn racism,” a racism implicit in the American Founding and that must be defeated and erased by continuous - - one could say, never ending - - struggle. And Reconstruction was the - - temporarily deferred - - attempt to realize the egalitarian meaning and results of that conflict.  His guiding praxis, like that of the preponderance of present-day American historians, is characterized by a kind of historical reductionism, shaped by intolerant and dogmatic cultural Marxism.   In fact, historians of the Marxist historical school are governed largely by their ideology and the supreme objective of not just re-writing and deconstructing American history, but erasing entire portions of it that don’t fit their preconceived narrative.

Any real dissent or questioning, albeit of the mildest and most respectful form, is forbidden.  Thus such recent revisionist studies as William Marvel’s Mr. Lincoln Goes to War (2006), John V. Denson’s A Century of War: Lincoln, Wilson & Roosevelt (2006), Thomas Fleming’s A Disease in the Public Mind (2013), and Philip Leigh’s Southern Reconstruction (2017), not to mention the scholarly volumes of Thomas diLorenzo - - all of which deviate from the Marxist template on race and racism - - are dismissed or ignored by mainstream historians.

It would be informative to discover how many of these non-Marxist titles find their way into modern college courses on the war and Reconstruction: not many, I suspect.

The cultural Marxist hyper-emphasis on race and racism now reaches into and pervades every aspect of our lives, dictating a rigid ideological orthodoxy, an orthodoxy that continues to metamorphosize and envelope every uttered word we speak or are allowed to speak.

All of which comes back to the essential point:  until we openly reject the dominant cultural Marxist template and praxis concerning equality and race as the controlling forces both intellectually and practically in our society, this utter lunacy will continue  and our very rights and existence as a people will continue to recede and disappear.
