MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

FEMINISM and ANTI-RACISM in Academia…the End of America?

Friends,

I pass on two items this morning.

The first is a news article detailing an incredible—almost unbelievable—epic “troll” of fashionable, politically-correct academia and supposedly prestigious academic journals by three serious academics who revealed the unseriousness, the ideologically-driven and fanatical nature of what passes for scholarship these days…and the hysterical reaction to their spoofing by those same outraged minions of modern “higher education” when they found out what had happened to them.

What Dr. Peter Boghossian, Professor of Philosophy at Portland State University (Oregon) and two fellow professors, did was create a number of scholarly-sounding essays, replete with detailed notes, all written in the prolix and mind-bending pseudo-language that characterizes so much of what passes for scholarship in our society. The difference was that Boghossian’s essays—his “scholarship”—were totally bogus, made up, and, on the face of it, totally ridiculous. Yet, since his topics were all centered on “racial oppression” and “historic toxic masculinity,” they were quickly lapped up by some of the more significant academic journals who supposedly offer educated commentary and analysis of the problems in our society—and the horrible burden  we carry as inheritors of  that hateful and oppressive Western culture.

When those journals, and Dr. Boghossian’s university, found out about what had happened, they howled like wounded coyotes caught in a rancher’s barbed wire fence. They had eagerly accepted fraud because it favored their ideological objectives and because it was written in such a way that literally no one down in eastern North Carolina’s rural Johnston County could understand a word of it.

Indeed, maybe one should find a clever attorney to see if charges of “language abuse” couldn’t be launched against those who spew out such gobbledegook.

The second article was written by a friend of mine, Dr. Bella d’Abrera, an Australian scholar who holds a doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Dr. d’Abrera has done superb work in the history of Tudor English history (her trilogy on Henry VIII and Queen Mary stands out) and in investigating the Spanish 15th century.  She recounts her experiences in defending what is termed “Western Christian civilization,” the extremely negative reactions she has received, and the undeniable fact that the near-entirety of academia now does its damnedest to attack, misinterpret, and undermine that tradition.

I have written previously about the utter decadence in higher education and its perversion, and my major argument has been that although we complain about the state of our culture and our politics, and although we know and admit that education—in particular, college education—is a critical battlefield, mostly all we do is talk.

Presently, for example, the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill flagrantly ignores North Carolina’s Monuments Protection Law of 2015, with its just terminated Chancellor Carol Folt unilaterally ordering the removal of the base of a century’s old monument to veterans from that university who volunteered during the War Between the States. In August 2018 a mob of Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and Communist Workers’ World Party radicals tore the statue down—Folt and her administration not only refused to enforce the state law and the laws against the destruction of public property, they directed campus law enforcement not to interfere with the lawlessness.

At present a timorous and cowardly UNC Board of Governors—composed almost entirely of Republicans—looks for a way to placate the radicals and somehow skate by the state statute, hoping no one will look too closely.

The actions of UNC at Chapel Hill—a public university supported by the taxpayers of North Carolina—are representative of a mindset, an ideological template, that most college administrators exhibit. It mirrors their belief that they no longer depend on the citizens who pay their salaries and foot their bills, but rather they must jump when the most radical, most vocal and most fanatical members of the “university community,” whether students or faculty, demand it. The only question they have, essentially, is: “How high?”

All the election victories, all the superb scribbling, even the construction of effective walls along the southern border—all of that will be to no avail to save our country if major and drastic steps aren’t taken to reform, and reform drastically, our educational system.

My dear friend and mentor, Dr. Clyde Wilson, perhaps the South’s pre-eminent historian and a holder of a PhD from UNC, has suggested that the only solution would be, as he states it somewhat sardonically, “to napalm” UNC and the other public universities.  In a way, I do find the idea attractive! But realistically, I would prefer legislative action and more involvement by our elected lawmakers—restructuring academic programs, insistence on and supervision over real “diversity” in hiring, and the creation of and support for outlying and semi-independent “institutes” that could counter the ideological and post-Marxist poison that now is drowning the hallowed halls of once great and admired institutions of learning.

Without that, without strong reform, no matter the Wall on the border, our culture—our civilization—is lost. At present the fanatical ideological maniacs control academia and most of our education, from grammar school to grad school. If that authoritarian hold isn’t broken, the future is lost.

Professor Tricks Academic Journals Into Publishing Joke Papers

Satire has become impossible
Donald Jeffries Mon, Feb 4, 2019
As political correctness continues its meteoric rise and career-lynchings increase, a university professor now faces firing after his spoof academic papers were published, fooling (then embarrassing) leftists.
Portland State University philosophy professor Peter Boghossian recently attempted to expose how ludicrous political correctness has become. Unfortunately for him, his attempt succeeded all too well—and now he may be out of a job.
Over the course of a few years, Boghossian and two academics produced 20 hoax essays, collectively called “the Grievance Studies” experiment, that were written to be as ridiculous as possible and designed to appeal to small special interest groups made up of mostly far-left scholars.
Seven of Boghossian’s bogus studies were accepted for publication by social science journals, including a feminist rewrite of Hitler’s Mein Kampf. The journal Gender, Place, and Culture bit on a piece claiming to study “canine rape culture.”
In that study, Boghossian and his colleagues charged that, “dog parks are rape-condoning spaces and a place of rampant canine rape culture and systemic oppression against ‘the oppressed dog’ through which human attitudes to both problems can be measured.” Boghossian’s team even claimed to have “tactfully inspected the genitals of slightly fewer than 10,000 dogs whilst interrogating owners as to their sexuality.”
In another eagerly accepted article, the hoaxers demanded that the world of bodybuilding recognize “fat bodybuilding, as a fat-inclusive politicized performance.”
For his efforts, which once brought to light should have caused academia to engage in some self-analysis, Portland State University moved to fire Boghossian.
“I truly hope the administration puts its institutional weight behind the pursuit of truth, but I’ve been given no indication that’s what they intend to do,” Boghossian said.
All of the journals involved are part of the dubious field of “grievance studies.” Some in the mainstream media attempted to rationalize and defend academia’s attachment to the most extreme, and in these cases totally fabricated, areas of identity politics that focus on gender and race.
A group of 11 Portland State professors and one graduate student published an anonymous letter in the student newspaper Vanguard, which featured a menacing image of Boghossian equipped with a Pinocchio nose. They charged Boghossian’s team with repeated “fraudulent behavior violating acceptable norms of research in any discipline” and castigated the beleaguered professor for inviting James Damore, who was fired by Google for exercising his right to free speech, to an event at the university.
“Boghossian has not only indicated his less-than-collegial attitude through his hoaxes,” they charged, “but has actively targeted faculty at other institutions. None of us wish to contend with threats of death and assault from online trolls.”
Some in the academic world displayed a degree of rationality. Yascha Mounk, a Harvard lecturer in government, condemned what he viewed as unfair attempts to undermine the hoaxers.
“Even if all of the charges laid at the feet of Boghossian [and the two other authors] were true, they would have demonstrated a very worrying fact,” Mounk wrote. “Some of the leading journals in areas like gender studies have failed to distinguish between real scholarship and intellectually vacuous as well as morally troubling [expletive deleted].”
In a recent YouTube video, Boghossian read out an email from Portland State, which threatened an investigation and sanctions against him.
“I think that they will do everything and anything in their power to get me out,” he stated. “And I think this is the first shot in that.”
Boghossian’s case is merely the latest example of political correctness run amok on college campuses across the country. Earlier this month, it was widely reported that Washington, D.C.’s American University would be hosting a multisession seminar aimed at getting faculty to combat “white language supremacy.” The seminar will also propose “alternative” methods of assessing writing other than quality, such as “labor-based grading contracts.”
While even the most unthreatening and lukewarm “conservative” voices have been denied the opportunity to speak at various universities, some astonishingly anti-white figures have been welcomed.
Christian evangelical Wheaton College, not a typical leftist institution, permitted Emory University philosophy professor George Yancy to speak there in 2017, in the esteemed Billy Graham Center on campus. His speech was filled with expletives and hateful declarations like, “To be white is to be racist.” Stephens College, a women’s college in Columbia, Mo., recently announced that it will “admit and enroll students who were not born female, but who identify and live as women.” All-women Mount Holyoke College canceled plans to change its logo due to protests that it could be perceived as not being inclusive to transgender students.
Boghossian merely demonstrated what is obvious: In today’s America, satire is impossible while a frighteningly authoritarian political correctness rules the day.

Western Civilisation “Not Welcome Here”

written by Bella d'Abrera   Published on September 27, 2018
In 2017, following the wishes of the late Paul Ramsay, a businessman and philanthropist who made his fortune in the healthcare industry, the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation was set up in Australia.  Paul Ramsay was deeply concerned that Australians are not being taught about Western Civilisation either at school or university. So he left part of his $3.4 billion fortune so that something would be done about it. As the Director of the Foundations of Western Civilisation Program at the Institute of Public Affairs, I have been keeping a close watch on developments.
The Ramsay Centre has devised a Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation based on great books and works of art, to be taught in partnership with universities. Since its launch however, the Ramsay Centre has encountered almost nothing but open hostility and resentment from potential university partners.
At the University of Sydney, staff some months ago launched a ‘Keep Ramsay out of USYD’ petition. The same staff are currently having conniptions because their Vice–Chancellor has now announced that he’ll consider taking the Centre’s $64 million grant if it gives the university complete control over the curriculum, the reading list, and the academic appointments involved with the Bachelor of Western Civilisation.
If you're opposed to Sydney University joining up with the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation, please sign and share the petition here on our new campaign page. A petition signed by lots of people – staff,… https://t.co/ypZvKayjSX

Prior to this, the Australian National University pulled out of negotiations at the 11thhour when its Vice-Chancellor cited concerns about academic autonomy following a very public and acrimonious pushback against the program from several ANU academics and the Tertiary Education Union.

*   *   *
A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a University of St Andrews alumni drinks in Melbourne. The evening began promisingly enough. A smart bar hotel bar, eight individuals of various ages and occupations, gathered together with the prospect of a pleasant evening of reminiscing ahead. Amid the usual exchange of pleasantries, I discovered that my one of my fellow attendees was a senior university administrator. When he learnt that I am currently the Director of the Foundations of Western Civilisation at the Institute of Public Affairs, I detected a slight look of discomfort. Any bonhomie that might have existed at the commencement of the evening vanished as soon as he asked me what I thought about the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation.

The rejection of a Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation is predicated on the absurd notion that anyone who wants to talk about or study Western Civilisation must be a white supremacist. In some academic circles, Western Civilisation is held responsible for all evils in the world, past, present and future.
“I think it is probably a sensible decision of ANU not to pursue negotiation in this regard because there's always going to be a much-slanted history that's about the superiority of the white race and not the devastation of the black race.” Dr Hannah McGlade @CurtinMedia  #TheDrumpic.twitter.com/FqVAPcJ5oN
— ABC The Drum (@ABCthedrum) June 7, 2018

Earlier this year, the Dean of Arts at Newcastle University wrote a piece for The Conversation in which she stated that Western Civilisation is past its used-by date and that it’s too ‘white’ to teach in multi-cultural classrooms. The University of Sydney academics leading the charge, claim that the BA will “pedal racism disguised as appreciation for ‘Western Culture.’” At a National Tertiary Education Union forum, former University of Sydney chair, sociologist and gender theorist Raewyn Connell, told her audience that the curriculum “has racism embedded in its agenda.”

When I articulated to my fellow alumnus that I had not been surprised at the response from Australian universities—given the antipathy displayed towards Western Civilisation by many academics—he did not think this hostility to be a bad thing. When I added that I thought all students studying an undergraduate degree in history, or any humanities degree for that matter, should be required to do a foundation course in Western Civilisation, he was shocked and horrified. From his point of view, knowing about what happened during the Scientific Revolution or the Enlightenment is an irrelevancy and a waste of students’ time. For him, history is about ‘issues,’ not knowledge.
It was at this point that I realised that just how far universities, especially the humanities departments, have strayed from their original purpose. From the Renaissance until the 1960s, the humanities, derived from the expression ‘studia humanitatis’ or the study of humanity, made it their purpose to make sense of and understand the world through the great traditions of art, culture and philosophy. There appeared in the 1970s and 1980s however, a range of ‘new humanities’ subjects which rejected this tradition. The new humanities were underpinned by a range of radical post-structuralism and post-modernist theories which had been conjured up in the previous decade by a predominantly French group of philosophers such as Jacques Derrida, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, as well as the psychiatrist, Jacques Lacan.
The new humanities maintain that for the last 500 years, Western Civilisation has got it wrong when it comes to knowledge, truth and science. These fields tend to claim that both knowledge and truth are not absolute, but are relative. For example, there is no objective truth and truth is dependent on who is speaking it and in what context.  Insofar as science is concerned, they claim that scientific theories don’t really provide us with what we could call knowledge but are actually “invented” rather than discovered.
History as a discipline best exemplifies the influence of the postmodernists and their ilk on the humanities. Many historians have enthusiastically embraced the idea that truth is no longer within the historian’s grasp and that it’s impossible to use history to add to knowledge about humankind.  This is the kind of thing which would normally signal the death knell for any discipline, but historians have risen from the ashes and have forged for themselves a new purpose—the attainment of social justice.
This is not social justice in the Enlightenment sense, which meant equality before the law and equal rights, but social justice in the activist sense, where the ultimate goal is to achieve perfect equality by destroying ‘oppressive’ institutions and rearranging society. The historians’ new role is to tell the inequality narrative of the oppressed and the oppressor through the lens of class, gender, and race. Matthew A. Sears, associate professor of classics and ancient history at the University of New Brunswick believes that ancient Greek sculptures epitomise racism and white supremacy, and that history is “about politics,” it’s main purpose being to “better understand the human condition and shed light on questions of contemporary relevance.”
Partisans assail historians for judging the past by today’s standards. Here’s why they’re wrong—Even by the standards of their day, many heroes of Western civilization engaged in immoral acts, by @matthewasears and  via @washingtonpost @madebyhistory https://t.co/WJoRYMhG6J

This approach has its origins in the nineteenth century, when Georg Hegel constructed his worldview of history into a narrative about stages of human freedom. His was the view that history was simply the process of moving towards the realisation of such freedom. Later that century, Karl Marx’s built on Hegel’s new paradigm with his theory of historical materialism, proposing that society’s productive capacity and social relations of production determined both its organisation and development.
Both Hegel and Marx essentially denied the role of individual human agency, treating the past as the product of inexorable forces and trends which were primarily of a material and economic nature. “Society” wrote Marx, “does not consist of individuals, but expresses the sum of interrelations, the relations within which these individuals stand.’’
Karl Marx essentially created the template of identity politics for the study of history with his notion that human society is in a constant state of struggle and a zero-sum contest for power. In the 1960s, his model was adopted by British historian Eric Hobsbawm who deliberately re-wrote the history of the “long 19thcentury” as being a century of class struggle. Hobsbawm successfully transformed history as an academic discipline into a vehicle for social policy.

Since the 1970s, historians have embraced Marx’s template and applied it to their own particular historical fields, re-writing the past from the point of view of class, gender, and race. These new histories have gradually replaced the traditional canon of historical subjects which once upon a time formed the basis of an undergraduate degree in history in Australia.
In 2017, a study of all 746 history subjects taught in Australian universities revealed that 244 of those subjects were devoted entirely to class, gender, and race. Many were a pastiche of identity politics in which the stunning complexity of the past is increasingly reduced to a very limited range of themes. Students at Melbourne University can take ‘A History of Sexualities’ in which they discuss “how the gendered body and sex have been simultaneously linked to social liberation and control.” At the Australian National University, students can consider “the concept of ‘race’ within the contexts of the development of scientific knowledge in ‘Human Variations and Racism in Western Culture, c. 1450-1950.”  A keyword search of all the history subject descriptions taught in 2017 reveals that there were more instances of the words gender and race than there are Enlightenment or Reformation.

What is more, a perusal of the University of Sydney’s history faculty staff profiles reveals that 20 of the 32 staff have variously identified gender and sexuality, racial thought, women’s history and power as their current historical fixations. The left-wing leitmotifs of class, race, and gender have replaced the essential core subjects which explain the political, intellectual, social and material basis of the history of Western Civilisation.
This approach is not only boring and repetitive, it is fundamentally anti-intellectual. Students in Australia are not being given a “positive formation” by their universities, which is exactly what the Ramsay Centre is attempting to rectify. Instead, they are being taught a narrow, one-dimensional view of the world seen through the prism of identity, over a curious and inquiring three-dimensional view of the world which opens the mind.
Students studying the humanities are not only finishing their degrees with a distorted view of the world in which the past is viewed as a contest between the oppressors and the oppressed, but they are imposing this particular worldview on society as they find employment in schools, government, and the corporate world. These days, for example, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to work out where gender departments finish and governmental departments or the corporate world begin, so blurred are the lines between them.
Since the 1960s, universities have been leading their students fairly and squarely down a path of un-education, unlearning and enlightenment, and they should be called to account. Now these students, filled with an ideological fervor and driven by social justice, are leading the rest of society down the same path, whether society wants it or not.

MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

NEWEST ESSAY Published by CHRONICLES Magazine: On Governor Northam and the Racist Template

Friends,

I substantially reworked the last installment of MY CORNER, from Sunday, February 3, titled, “Virginia Governor Northam, Racism, and the Gadarene Swine of 2019,” and it was picked up almost immediately by CHRONICLES Magazine, and now appears on the magazine’s online site. Below I pass it on to you.

CHRONICLES, as I have written previously, is the leading print journal representing traditional Old Right conservatism in America today. Founded in 1976, over the years it has published some of the finest authors in the Anglosphere on serious and critical topics—education, foreign policy, the role of women in society, racial issues, states’ rights and constitutionalism, while not neglecting the Western and Christian literary and cultural heritage vouchsafed to us by generations who have gone before. Although there are several fine online magazines that do similar journeyman’s work (CHRONICLES offers an online version as well), it is this journal, published by the Rockford Institute,  that is a must read for those truly interested in our endangered legacy as a people.

I recommend strongly that you subscribe to this monthly journal. In our times—in this critical moment of our history—CHRONICLES is a life-line, an indispensable shield and buckler as we do battle against the enemies of our civilization.

To enter a subscription please go to:  https://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/my-account/subscribe/  You will not regret it—and you will have in your hands each month a veritable and well-written “weapon” of inestimable worth in the ongoing defense of our culture.

virginia governor northam, racism, and the gadarene swine of 2019
By: Boyd D. Cathey | February 04, 2019
You would have thought Virginia Democrat Governor Ralph Northam had been a co-conspirator in the assassination of Martin Luther King, given the reaction to what appeared to be a page in his 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook.
Both the Democrats on the Left and the “virtue-signaling” Republicans and movement conservatives—that is, the near entirety of the political spectrum—howled and bayed: it was time for Northam to step down because of a “racist” depiction, made some thirty-five years ago when he was a student, which he now says he was not in. And, despite his profuse apologies to any and every one in earshot, it was not at all clear that he would survive the political maelstrom.
The national media, including especially Fox News, have run with this story nearly every minute of the day like a hound dog after a scared fox: For the Left and Democrats this is an immense embarrassment, an incredible political fiasco. For the establishment conservatives, this is an opportunity to demonstrate their “anti-racist” virtuousness to anyone in sight listening or watching: “Hey, look we conservatives aren’t racists; it’s you Democrats who harbor such folks!”
Of course, Northam should step down, but not because of a juvenile prank he may or may not have committed nearly forty years ago. But rather for his despicable and incredibly evil support for what, in effect, is infanticide—the murder of infants who have just been born, who are outside the womb: his horrid comments that he made earlier last week endorsing a bill introduced into the Virginia legislature that would permit just that.
A few years ago, in a better and more civilized and more moral time, such commentary, such support for what is in fact selective murder of the newly-born would have drawn mighty condemnations from leaders of both political parties and outrage throughout our society. Yet, with scandalous uniformity, the leaders of the Democratic Party all rather lamely declared that they had not seen or heard of Northam’s comments (e.g. Nancy Pelosi). Nothing must impede, you see, the onward march of the pro-abortion Gadarene Swine who now give form and direction to the once-estimable party of Jefferson and Cleveland, of Harry Byrd and Richard Russell, in their headlong plunge into the dark and truly demonic anti-life Abyss.
The major media paid scant, almost no attention to Northam’s earlier comments. They had to act that way. For millions of nervous Americans abortion is no longer an issue they wish to confront. All the mounting scientific evidence about life, about its real existence from conception, about the constant, if downplayed, examples of gruesome killing—the horrific case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell stands out—are a mere inconvenience. Indeed, for the militant feminists and their follow-along supporters, abortion has become in reality a new sacrament, a kind of badge of honor, a symbol of an immense and furious rebellion against Creation and against Nature, itself. It is the ultimate attempt to free themselves from who they are and how they were created . . . and, despite their claims to the contrary, it is the ultimate rejection of personhood and any real dignity associated with it.
That was Northam’s egregious and irremediable error—he, a sitting governor and a major player in the Democratic hierarchy, spoke openly of what is now the template of his political party, and which even many mainstream Republicans no longer appear willing to challenge.
But it took the yearbook depiction—a juvenile romp nearly four decades ago—to secure notice from the Mainstream Media, and then only due to an investigation by some conservatives out to attack Northam. And it gave the minions of “Conservatism, Inc.” the opportunity to brag loudly about how THEY were not racists, how the Democratic Party had a “long history of racism,” and to beat their breasts and signal THEIR unsullied virtue.
And it also, in the long run, plays into the dynamic that rules our contemporary society: that racism along with “toxic”—white—“masculinity” are the major obstacles facing us on that painful road to true “equality.” It is a chimerical goal, a dangerous and false “god” that leads to the dissolution and destruction of our culture and civilization. It means the “cleansing” of our heritage and of our traditions; it means the radical indoctrination of our youth; it means the ultimate conversion of this country into something totally unrecognizable to the Founders and Framers; it means in effect rebellion against God and His order of things.
The establishment conservatives, in their abject fear of those on their left and in an attempt to gain some political points, whether they understand it or not, have eagerly bought into this template. They conspicuously join the howling mob and condemn racism, racism in any form as defined by the latest dogmatic ukase emitted by the revolutionary Left.
Where does it all end? If a student prank from 1984 can cause such a furor and silent monuments to Confederate veterans of 155 years ago (most of whom had no slaves but were fighting for their homes and states) can become the center of such hysteria as we have seen in recent months, let us ask: was not the very Founding of this nation, itself, also “racist?” For was not this nation, following the progressivist narrative, founded by “racists” and founded on a “racist” Constitution? Indeed, isn’t our very civilization racist and unequal by this definition? And if that be the case, then the egalitarian logic of the revolutionary post-Marxist Workers’ World Party in a way makes some sense: everything must be overturned and obliterated, and a veritable new order established—a new dystopian order that will make Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four seem like a libertarian paradise in comparison.
The feeble attempts by Republicans and establishment conservatives to prove to the farther Left and mainstream just how “virtuous” and free of racism they are only enable the extremist Left, the race hustlers, and demonic feminists, and their template and their mad ideology.
And that leads to a fate far worse than that of the Gadarene Swine.

MY CORNER by Boyd Cathey

Virginia Governor Northam, Racism, and the Gadarene Swine of 2019

Friends,

You would have thought Virginia Democrat Governor Ralph Northam had been a co-conspirator in the assassination of Martin Luther King—given the reaction to what appeared to be a page in his Virginia Military Institute Yearbook. (He graduated from VMI in 1981, but the media claim the page is from 1984, a time when Northam was studying at the Eastern Virginia Medical School.)

Both the unhinged Left and the “virtue-signaling” Republicans and minions of Establishment “Conservatism, Inc.”—that is, the near entirety of the political establishment—howled and bayed: it was time for Northam to step down because of a “racist” depiction, which he now says he was not in, made some thirty-five years ago when he was a student.

The national media, including most especially Fox News, have run with this story nearly every minute of the day like a hound dog after a scared fox: For the Left and Democrats this is an immense embarrassment, an incredible political fiasco—and Northam must step down, he must go.

For the Establishment conservatives, this is an opportunity to demonstrate their “anti-racist” virtuousness to anyone in sight listening or watching: “Hey, look we conservatives aren’t racists; it’s you Democrats who harbor such folks!”—and Northam must step down, he must go.

Of course, Northam should step down, but not because of a juvenile prank he may or may not have committed nearly forty years ago. But rather for his despicably callous and incredibly evil support for what, in effect, is infanticide—the murder of infants who have just been born, who are outside the womb: horrid comments that he made earlier last week endorsing a bill introduced into the Virginia legislature that would permit just that.

A few years ago, in a better and more civilized and more moral time, such commentary, such support for what is in fact selective killing of the newly-born would have drawn mighty condemnations from leaders of both political parties and outrage throughout our society. Yet, with scandalous uniformity, the leaders of the Democratic Party, all rather lamely declared that they had not seen or heard of Northam’s comments (e.g. Nancy Pelosi). Nothing must impede, you see, the onward march of the Gadarene Swine who now give form and direction to the once-estimable party of Jefferson and Jackson, of Harry Byrd and Richard Russell, in their headlong plunge into the dark and truly demonic anti-life Abyss.

The major media paid scant, almost no attention to Northam’s earlier comments. It had to do that. For millions of nervous Americans abortion is no longer an issue they wish to confront. All the mounting scientific evidence about life, about its real existence from conception, about the constant, if downplayed, examples of utterly horrible killing—the case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and others like him—are a mere inconvenience. Indeed, for the frenzied militant feminists and their timid follow-along supporters, abortion has become in reality a new sacrament, a kind of badge of honor, a symbol of an immense and furious rebellion against Creation and against Nature, itself. It is the ultimate attempt to free themselves from who they are and how they were created…and, despite their claims to the contrary, it is the ultimate rejection of personhood and any real dignity associated with it.

That was Northam’s egregious and irremediable error—he, a sitting governor and a major player in the Democratic hierarchy spoke openly what is now the template of his political party, and which even many mainstream Republicans no longer wish to challenge.

But it took the yearbook depiction—a juvenile unthinking romp nearly four decades ago—to secure notice from the Mainstream Media, and then only due to an investigation by some conservatives out to attack Northam. And it gave the epigones of “Conservatism, Inc.” the opportunity to brag loudly about how THEY were not racists, how the Democratic Party had a “long history of racism,” and to beat their breasts and signal THEIR oh-so-immaculate virtue.

And it also, in the long run, played into the dynamic that rules our contemporary society: that racism along with “toxic”—white—“masculinity” are the major obstacles facing us on that painful road to true “equality.” It is a chimerical goal, a false and dangerous “god” that leads to the dissolution and destruction of our culture and civilization. It means the “cleansing” of our society of our heritage, and of most of our traditions; it means the radical education—perversion—of our youth; it means the ultimate conversion of this country into something totally unrecognizable to the Founders and Framers; it means in effect rebellion against God and His order of things.

The establishment conservatives, in their attempt to gain some political points, whether they understand it or not, have eagerly bought into this template. They, too, condemn "racism," racism of any form, racism from forty years ago, "racism" of, let’s see, not just those Confederate soldiers (who are condemned by prominent "movement conservatives" like National Review's Rich Lowry), but also eventually, the racism of the very Founding, itself. For was not this nation, following the narrative, founded by “racists” and founded on a “racist” Constitution? Indeed, isn’t our very civilization racist and unequal by definition? And if that be the case, then the revolutionary post-Marxist ideology of the Workers’ World Party in a way makes sense: everything must be overturned and obliterated, and a veritable new order established—a new dystopian order that will make Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four seem like a libertarian paradise in comparison.

The Fox punditocracy now runs like hounds after the Northam fox for his racism, but Governor Northam’s youthful antics in 1984 are not the real issue here, rather it his support for infanticide where the battle lines should and must be drawn. The feeble attempts by Republicans and establishment conservatives to prove to the farther Left and mainstream just how “virtuous” and free of racism they are only enable the extremist Left, the race hustlers, and demonic feminists, and their template and their lunacy and mad ideology.

And that leads to a fate far worse than that of the Gadarene Swine.

Friends,

A few days ago my installment in the MY CORNER series, “Venezuela, the Deep State, and Subversion of the Trump Presidency,” got picked up, a bit edited, by THE UNZ REVIEW, and then also by RUSSIA INSIDER. I have had forty-nine essays published by UNZ, and most have been received fairly well by readers. Indeed, many of the topics I considered were cultural issues, pieces on the attacks on historic Confederate monuments, even some movie reviews and a discussion of how the American Western reflects cinematically significant aspects of our history and heritage.

However, this most recent essay unleashed a torrent of vitriol and unrestrained commentary that divined all sorts of dark and sinister motives and intent in what I scribbled. The fact that I wrote that I believed President Nicolas Maduro was a socialist “tin-pot dictator wannabe,” and that I hoped the citizens of Venezuela and elements of the army might persuade him to leave—and that I supported diplomatic and economic sanctions—brought all sorts of accusations: that I was secretly (or maybe not so secretly) an Establishment Deep State “plant,” that I was  working on behalf of international Zionism, and that my not uncritical—I have been critical—support for President Trump indicated that I was a “sell-out” to globalism. Some of the commentary could have gotten me suspended had I uttered it in my grammar school days—but that was years ago, and maybe the “F-bomb” and other once-banned words in public now find favor and currency as a substitute for thoughtful criticism?

I thought I was clear in the essay that I do not favor American intervention, that American military involvement is the wrong course of action, just as it has been in Syria and Iraq. Indeed, I think I have a long record of published writings saying exactly that—that we should not be going around the world and attempting to impose “democracy” and all the worst fruits of “Americanism” on every remote desert oasis and faraway impenetrable jungle.

Despite the fact that I’ve been attacked in print by Morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center and placed on a list, “40 to Watch,” largely because of an exhaustive investigation I made of the SPLC back in 2003 that hurt Dees’ organization, and labeled by his group as everything from a “radical right” Neo-Confederate, a racist, a bigoted Catholic right winger, to even a Holocaust denier—despite all that, it seems for a few readers that what I wrote a few days ago revealed me as a wide-eyed Leftist. Odd, doesn’t it seem, to be labeled on the one hand a “plant” of an international Zionist conspiracy, and on the other, assaulted by Morris Dees as a veritable “anti-semite?”

Re-reading what I wrote, I do believe I could have stated that paragraph about Maduro and American reaction a bit differently. I do believe—and I did say so briefly in my column—that the US has been involved in subverting the Maduro government, and, in principle, I oppose such actions, just as I opposed strongly our role in overthrowing the Ukrainian government and the governments of other countries around the world. But I could have been clearer and sharper.

Nevertheless, in spite of the critical comments on my piece at UNZ, the RUSSIA INSIDER Web site and blog picked up this column and ran it as well [ https://russia-insider.com/en/venezuela-deep-state-and-subversion-trump-presidency/ri26104?ct=t(Russia_Insider_Daily_Headlines11_21_2014)&mc_cid=eb769ba55d&mc_eid=4e31a191e0 ]. Fascinating. If somehow I were writing on behalf of the Deep State which is ferociously anti-Russian, why would RUSSIA INSIDER, which defends the policies and government of Russia, pick up and run my essay?

I have no explanation—except I am still waiting for my payments from both the Washington Elites as well as from my pal Vladimir Putin….I just hope that they don’t find out I am working for both sides!

Here’s the essay, again:

THE UNZ REVIEW
Venezuela, the Deep State, and Subversion of the Trump Presidency
BOYD D. CATHEY • JANUARY 29, 2019
There he was, right there on the stage to the right side of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who was briefing the press on America’s position concerning the recent coup in Venezuela. I rubbed my eyes—was I seeing what I thought I was seeing?

It was Elliot Abrams. What was HE doing there? After all, back in February 2017, after then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had pushed for his nomination as Deputy Secretary of State, it was President Trump himself who had vetoed his appointment.
Here is how the anodyne account in Wikipedia describes it:

In February 2017, it was reported that Abrams was Secretary of State Rex Tillerson‘s first pick for Deputy Secretary of State, but that Tillerson was subsequently overruled by Trump. Trump aides were supportive of Abrams, but Trump opposed him because of Abrams’ opposition during the campaign. [emphasis mine]

Abrams during the 2016 campaign had been a NeverTrumper who vigorously opposed Donald Trump and who had strongly attacked the future president’s “Make America Great Again,” America First foreign policy proposals.

Abrams, a zealous Neoconservative and ardent globalist was—and is—one of those foreign policy “experts” who has never seen a conflict in a faraway country, in a desert or jungle, where he did not want to insert American troops, especially if such an intervention would support Israeli policy. He was deeply enmeshed in earlier American interventionist miscues and blunders in the Middle East, even incurring charges of malfeasance.

Apparently, President Trump either did not know that or perhaps did not remember Abrams’s activities or stout opposition. In any case, back in 2017 it took an intervention by a well-placed friend with Washington connections who provided that information directly to Laura Ingraham who then, in turn, placed it on the president’s desk And Abrams’ selection was effectively stopped, torpedoed by Donald Trump.

But here now was Abrams on stage with the Secretary of State.

What was that all about?

Again, I went to Wikipedia, and once again, I quote from that source: “On January 25, 2019, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appointed Abrams as the United States’ Special Envoy to Venezuela.”

Despite President Trump’s resolute veto back in February 2017, Abrams was back, this time as a Special Envoy, right smack in the department that President Trump had forbade him to serve in. Did the president know? Had he signed off on this specially-created appointment? After all, the very title “Special Envoy on Venezuela” seems something dreamed up bureaucratically by the policy wonks at State, or maybe by Mike Pompeo.

Then there was the widely reported news, accompanied by a convenient camera shot of National Security Adviser John Bolton’s note pad (which may or may not have been engineered by him), with the scribble: “5,000 troops to Colombia.”

What gives here?

Last week suddenly there was a coup d’etat in Venezuela, with the head of the national assembly, Juan Guiado, proclaiming himself as the country’s new and rightful president, and the theoretical deposition of then-current President Nicolas Maduro. And we were told that this action was totally “spontaneous” and an “act of the Venezuelan people for democracy,” and that the United States had had nothing to do with it.

If you believe that, I have an oil well in my backyard that I am quite willing to sell to you for a few million, or maybe a bit less.

Of course, the United States and our overseas intelligence services were involved.

Let me clarify: like most observers who have kept up with the situation in oil-rich Venezuela, I heartily dislike and find despicable the socialist government of Maduro, just as I did Hugo Chavez when he was in power. I have some good friends there, one of whom was a student of mine when I taught in Argentina many years ago, and he and his family resolutely oppose Maduro. Those socialist leaders in Caracas are tin-pot dictator wannabees who have wrecked the economy of that once wealthy country; and they have ridden roughshod over the constitutional rights of the citizens. My hope has been that the people of Venezuela, perhaps supported by elements in the army, would take action to rid the country of those tyrants.
And, in effect, I wish for the success of Juan Guaido in his struggle with Maduro, and I support American diplomatic and economic pressure on Maduro to step down. After all, Venezuela is in our back yard with huge oil reserves.

But potentially sending American troops—as many as 5,000—to fight in a country which is made up largely of jungle and impassible mountains, appears just one more instance, one more example, of the xenophobic internationalism of men like Bolton and the now state department official, Abrams, who believe American boots on the ground is the answer to every international situation. Experience over the past four decades should indicate the obvious folly of such policies for all but the historically blind and ideologically corrupt.

While we complain that the Russians and Chinese have propped up the Maduro government and invested deeply in Venezuela, a country within our “sphere of influence” in the Western Hemisphere (per the “Monroe Doctrine”)—we have done the very same thing, even more egregiously in regions like Ukraine that were integrally part of historical Russia, and in Crimea, which was never really part of Ukraine (only for about half a century) but historically and ethnically Russian. Did we not solemnly pledge to Mikhail Gorbachev, under George H. W. Bush, that if the old Soviet Union would dissolve and let its some fourteen socialist “republics” go their own way, leave the Russian Federation, that we, in turn, would not advance NATO up to the borders of Russia? And then we did the exact opposite…almost immediately go back on our word and move our troops and advisers right up to the borders of post-1991 Russia?

From mid-2015 on I was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, and, in many ways, I still am. In effect, he may be the only thing that stands in the way of a total and complete recouping of power by the Deep State, the only slight glimmer of light—that immovable force who stands up at times to the power-elites and who has perhaps given us a few years of respite as the managerial class zealously attempts to repair the breach he—and we—inflicted on it in 2016.

My major complaint, what I have seen as a kind of Achilles’ Heel in the Trump presidency, has always been in personnel, those whom the president has surrounded himself with. And my criticism is measured and prudential, in the sense that I also understand what happens—and what did happen—when a billionaire businessman, a kind of bull-in-the-china shop (exactly what was needed), comes to Washington and lacks experience with the utterly amoral and oleaginous and obsequious political class that has dominated and continues to dominate our government, both Democrats and, most certainly, Republicans.

The wife of a very dear friend of thirty-five years served in a fairly high post during the Reagan administration. Before her untimely death a few years ago, she recounted to me in stark detail how the minions and acolytes of George H. W. Bush managed to surround President Reagan and subvert large portions of the stated Reagan Agenda. Reagan put his vice-president effectively in charge of White House personnel: and, as they say, that was it, the Reagan Revolution was essentially over.

In 2016 a number of friends and I created something called “Scholars for Trump.” Composed mostly of academics, research professors, and accomplished professionals, and headed by Dr. Walter Block, Professor of Economics at Loyola-New Orleans, and Dr. Paul Gottfried, Raffensperger Professor of Humanities at Elizabethtown College, in Pennsylvania, we attempted to gather real professed believers in the stated Trump agenda. We received scant mention (mostly negative) in the so-called “conservative” press, who proceeded to smear us as “ultra-right wingers” and “paleo-conservatives.” And, suddenly, there appeared another pro-Trump list, and that one composed largely of the same kinds of professionals, but many if not most of whom had not supported Donald Trump and his agenda during the primary campaigns.

What was certain was that many of the amoral time-servers and power elitists had decided that it was time for them to attach themselves to Trump, time for them to insinuate themselves into positions of power once again, no matter their distaste and scorn for that brash billionaire upstart from New York.

Remember the (in)famous interview that the President-elect had with Mitt Romney who desperately wanted to be Secretary of State? Recall the others also interviewed—some of whom we remembered as Donald Trump’s opponents in the campaign—who came hat-in-hand to Trump Tower looking for lucrative positions and the opportunity once again to populate an administration and direct policy? And, yes, work from within to counteract the stated Trump agenda?

It would be too facile to blame the president completely: after all, the professional policy wonks, the touted experts in those along-the-Potomac institutes and foundations, were there already in place. And, indeed, there was a need politically, as best as possible, to bring together the GOP if anything were to get through Congress. (As we have seen, under Paul Ryan practically none of the Trump Agenda was enacted, and Ryan at every moment pushed open borders.)

Our contacts did try; we did have a few associates close to the president. A few—but only a few—of our real Trump Agenda supporters managed to climb aboard. But in the long run we were no match for the machinations of the power elites and GOP establishment. And we discovered that the president’s major strength—not being a Washington Insider—was also his major weakness, and that everything depended on his instincts, and that somehow if the discredited globalists and power-hungry Neoconservatives (who did not give Trump the time of day before his election) were to go too far, maybe, hopefully, he would react.

And he has, on occasion done just that, as perhaps in the case of Syria, and maybe even in Afghanistan, and in a few other situations. But each time he has had to pass the gauntlet of “advisers” whom he has allowed to be in place who vigorously argue against (and undercut) the policies they are supposed to implement.

Donald Trump, for all that and for his various faults and miscues, is in reality the only thing standing in the way of the end of the old republic. The fact that he is so violently and unreservedly hated by the elites, by the media, by academia, and by Hollywood must tell us something. In effect, however, it not just the president they hate, not even his rough-edged personality—it is what he represents, that in 2016 he opened a crack, albeit small, into a world of Deep State putrefaction, a window into sheer Evil, and the resulting falling away of the mask of those “body snatchers” who had for so long exuded confidence that their subversion and control was inevitable and just round the corner.

President Trump will never be forgiven for that. And, so, as much as I become frustrated with some of the self-inflicted wounds, some of the actions which appear at times to go flagrantly against his agenda, as much as I become heartsick when I see the faces of Elliot Abrams—and Mitt Romney—in positions where they can continue their chipping away at that agenda, despite all that, I continue to pray that his better instincts will reign and that he will look beyond such men, and just maybe learn that what you see first in Washington is usually not what you’ll get.
